Re-Designing the MAPerformance FK8 Intake

Re-Designed MAPerformance
FK8 Type-R Intake

During the design process of our Type R intake, we focused on allowing the factory snorkel and gasket sizes to be increased while maintaining the same installation process as our standard intake. By carefully constructing the MAF housing, we were able to create the most uniform airflow possible from the filter to the turbo. As a result of this design study, we were able to slightly curve the entire MAF housing so it would be perfectly tangent to the factory inlet pipe.

Another goal was to optimize the contact between the gasket and the hood. Some intakes re-use the OEM gasket and compromise their overall size to get that gasket to fit, or the gasket surface is misshaped to meet up with the hood. As part of this intake, the engine hood was scanned and aligned in CAD so that the airbox and front clip gaskets could perfectly fit against its geometry even when it moved under load. In our dyno testing, we observed huge deflection of the engine mounts, and the MAF housing and airbox tolerances are designed to allow this movement without stressing them.

As a result of the fundamental design of this intake, both the performance on the dyno and the road testing have proven positive. We observed an increase in airflow capacity on the dyno and consistent performance on the road with the filter being fed by cold air from the bumper, combined with an optimized MAF housing. The intake will keep intake temperatures low during track days and spirited driving for long periods of time.
